Autism Spectrum Testing for Children, Teens, and Adults

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behavior. Testing helps you and your family understand your strengths and challenges, and find the right support.

People with autism may experience challenges with social interaction, along with restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. At Rock Springs, comprehensive autism testing helps individuals and families understand what's going on and points toward the most effective treatment and accommodations.

What are the symptoms of autism?

Symptoms vary widely from person to person. They usually fall into a few areas:

  • Social communication: trouble reading social cues, making eye contact, or keeping a back-and-forth conversation going
  • Sensory sensitivities: discomfort with sounds, textures, or lights
  • Routines and interests: rigid routines and intense special interests

Some people with autism also have co-occurring conditions like ADHD or anxiety, which can affect daily life further.

How do you test for autism?

An accurate autism evaluation uses more than one method.

  • Input from you and key observers. Parents, teachers, or a spouse help us understand social interactions, communication, and behavior patterns.
  • Performance-based measures. Tasks evaluate social cognition, executive functioning, and sensory processing.

This comprehensive approach leads to a thorough, accurate diagnosis and recommendations made for you. Learn how the testing process works.

Are there different types of autism?

The DSM-5 describes three severity levels of autism, based on how much support a person needs:

Level 1

Requires support.

Level 2

Requires substantial support.

Level 3

Requires very substantial support.

Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder is a related condition. It involves difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, without the restrictive behaviors seen in autism.

You may also hear terms like Demand Avoidance, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and AuDHD (autism and ADHD combined). These are widely discussed and researched in the autism community, but they are not formally recognized diagnoses. Even so, our treatment recommendations and accommodations are tailored to your specific needs, including challenges that may align with PDA or AuDHD.

How is autism treated?

Autism treatment is highly individualized. It focuses on communication, social skills, and daily functioning. Helpful options may include:

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Executive functioning coaching
  • Sensory integration techniques
  • Social skills training
  • Structured routines

There is no single treatment for autism. Your evaluation gives you personalized recommendations, so you and your family can find the therapies, accommodations, and support services that work best.

Autism testing questions

Do you test adults for autism?
Yes. We evaluate children, teens, and adults, ages 4 and older. Many people go years feeling different before testing explains why.
Can you diagnose PDA or AuDHD?
Demand Avoidance, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and AuDHD (autism and ADHD together) are widely discussed in the autism community but are not formal diagnoses. Our recommendations and accommodations are still tailored to your specific needs, including challenges that may align with PDA or AuDHD.
What is Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder?
Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder is a related condition. It involves difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, without the restricted or repetitive behaviors seen in autism.
Is a screener the same as an autism evaluation?
No. A screener can help you decide whether a full evaluation makes sense, but it cannot diagnose autism. Read why screeners can't replace full testing.
How fast will I get results?
With Signature Testing ($1,800), your report is ready about two weeks after testing. With Concierge Testing ($2,300), you get feedback and your report the same day.
